Nichol Avenue Storm Pond & Wetland
The Nichol Avenue Residential Development is constructed next to an existing wetland. Extensive naturalization was required to protect the wetland. The planting plan utilized smaller stock trees and shrubs combined with a deeper-than-normal topsoil profile. the landscape plan envisioned the removal of long areas of the cattail marsh and the creation of open water habitat. The creation of isolated islands in the open water provided habitat opportunities for wildlife protection. This increased the potential for bio-diversity. There were 3 times more plants than typically required when using large caliper stock. The overall cost to the developer was less than 1/3, and the result more than satisfies the conservation authority and Town of Whitby objectives and creates a unique, cost effective wildlife and amenity space.
