North Pickering, Ontario
Henry Kortekaas & Associates Inc. were retained by Fourteen Estates, custom home builders, to develop a coldwater stream restoration plan and an upscale entrance feature that respected limited space for their award winning and exclusive enclave of homes in North Pickering.
The creek connected an existing waterway to the north and south through the Barclay development. This site was developed from an open gravel pit. We proposed a new naturally weaving channel, following existing topography with a step-pool sequence design. We worked with the local Conservation Authority and the Ministry of Natural Resources to ensure the design would support the cold water fish habitat and avoid excessive erosion.
The firm was responsible for all natural valley habitat restoration as well as the urban design of the entrance feature and associated planting. The firm was also responsible for developing cost-effective methods to transplant major groupings of vegetation from areas to be developed to new areas to be preserved.
